101 Workshop Unit was established on November 23, 1975 at Grootfontein in northern South-West Africa in support of Operation Savannah. The unit badge reflects its Namibian heritage in the form of a Makalani Palm as well as the red, blue and gold colours of the Technical Service Corps. The unit served at Grootfontein until June 1989 when it was moved to the SA Army Battle School at Lohatlha.

No 4 Squadron was originally formed as an Internal Security support squadron. It was originally based at Thornhill Air Base in Gwelo. It operated the Percival Provost (T52) aircraft until they were replaced in 1967 by the Lockheed Aeromachi AL60 Trojan aircraft. The remaining Provost aircraft were transferred to No 6 Squadron.
